Safety

Your safety is very important to us. Here are just a few rules you should follow to help keep and other young people staying here at St Basils safe.

Dashboard / Your Home / Safety
  • Fire prevention

Read the fire instructions in your room. Make sure you know where your escape route is and how to use fire alarms or fire extinguishers.

Never play around with fire extinguishers – you do not know when you may need them. Keep fire doors shut. A fire door can stop the spread of a fire for a minimum of half an hour, so do not prop doors open.

Do not ignore the fire alarm if it goes off.

Tests may be carried out at time but always check.

    Take fire risks seriously.

Everyone thinks it will never happen to them, but you can never be too careful.

  • Microwave and main oven safety guide

    Never leave cooking food unattended.

Always read the instructions on the food that is going to be cooked. Most food items list two different times; one for conventional ovens and one for microwaves. make sure you use the correct timings. use a suitable cloth / oven glove when removing your food from the oven or microwave.

Always check you have switched off the appliance after use. Wip hobs and clean the grill pan after each use once cool.

If you feel that this piece of equipment is faulty please notify a member of staff.

  • Kitchen safety

    Don’t leave your cooking unattended!

If you have to leave the kitchen turn off the hob or grill. If you create fumes please do not open the corridor door to disperse them – this will set off the smoke alarm in the corridor. Open the window instead. If a fre does start sound the alarms, turn off the cooking if safe to do so and always evacuate the building.

Think of other people who need to use the kitchen after use – wipe up your spills and keep the area tidy.

Help keep the kitchen a pleasant space to use for everyone.

  • Disposal of glass and sharp items

The disposal of glass is the responsibility of the individual. Please place your clean empty glass bottles and jars into the recycling bins. Do not let glass or recycling build up in kitchens. Do not put sharp items in the kitchen or room bins without first wrapping the item in paper or card to prevent accidental injury.

Sharps are any item with a point of edge that could cut or pierce skin, for example: broken glass, broken cutlery, damaged knives and old razors.

  • Ensure your back door is locked for your safety

Your safety and security is our priority. Make sure that all back doors to the property are locked and remain locked, even when you are home.

  • Electrical goods

Learn how to wire a plug correctly, and use the correct fuse. You can find out more about this here.

Never put bare wires into a socket. You can buy safe extension plugs.

Staff will ask to check your electrical items to make sure that they are in a safe condition. Portable appliances should never be taken into the bathroom.

  • Gas safety

If you smell gas, check that the cooker and gas fire have been turned off properly. Do not use electrical switched; or light a cigarette or use a mobile phone. Pen a window to clear the gas from the building. If everything is switched off, phone the Gas Board Emergency Number:
